40-Hour Basic Crime Scene InvestigationsĀ
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This 40 hour crime scene investigation course will provide students with basic knowledge and experience to process crime scenes and use their equipment. Numerous topics will be instructed including: legal standards, search warrants, scene preservation, photography, documentation, evidence collection, fingerprint evidence, DNA, trace evidence, ALS, footwear and other impression evidence collection. Students should bring what equipment their department provides to learn its use through hands-on training. Scene scenarios and practical exercises will be performed daily to prepare students with experience and confidence.
GOALS: The Goals of the Course are as follows
-Learn proper response to crime scenes and how to secure the scene for processing.
-Discuss legal considerations, case studies, and how to write a search warrant.
-Familiarize students with the 7-Step scene protocol.
-Learn how to document the scene and evidence through photography, measurements, and sketching.
-To obtain a working knowledge of standard CSI equipment.
-Be able to use a DSLR camera under various light conditions and capture evidential quality photos with the use of a macro lens.
Student Pack List:
Department Crime Scene Processing kit
DSLR camera with external flash, flash cord, shutter cord, tripod, macro lens
Any additional lenses with any additional filters
Flashlight
Any other departmental CSI equipment that you would like to bring to become more familiar with
Laptop computer to view photos
If you want to attend, but don’t have the above equipment, please reach out to me, we may have certain extras or pair people up, just bring what you do have. I have an DSLR camera and tripod I’m willing to loan out for that matter.
