Handcuffing of Inmates and Cell searches
8 Hours participatory training focusing on cuffing techniques (standing, kneeling, and prone cuffing) within a correctional center. Correctional Officers should become proficient in applying restraints quickly and properly to reduce the likelihood of assault. The officer’s threat assessment of a situation will determine the position and restraints used on a suspect / detainee. The higher the perceived threat, based upon the totality of circumstances, the greater the degree of control should be imposed upon the subject. For example, using a kneeling or prone technique as opposed to standing. This course of instruction provides information and techniques to be followed during cell and area search for and control of contraband within a Correctional Facility, standardizing procedures for the inspection and search of a detainee’s living quarters, or any area in or around a correctional facility to aid in the control of contraband. In addition, the course reveals to participants that searching a detainee’s cell / area is sound correctional practice and a necessary element of contraband control. The employee will learn the importance of thoroughness and not to offend the dignity of the detainee’s cell / area being searched. Using the principle of being Systematic, Thorough, and Objective in the Correctional Officer’s approach will enhance the safety and security of the Correctional Facility.
